Association for Historical Dialogue and Research
Department Member, Cyprus Critical History Archive project
About
Antonis Hadjikyriacou is currently employed as a researcher for the Cyprus Critical History Archive project (http://www.ahdr.info/cyprus_history_archive.php), jointly undertaken by the Association for Historical Dialogue and Research (AHDR) and Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), Cyprus Centre. The project aims to collect, digitise and catalogue information and sources on inter-communal relations and conflict-related violence in Cyprus between 1955 and 1964.
Antonis earned his Ph.D. in History at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London in April 2011. The title of his thesis was “Society and Economy on an Ottoman Island: Cyprus in the Eighteenth Century”, and was supervised by Professor Benjamin Fortna.
Other than the history of Cyprus and the social and economic history of the Ottoman Empire, Antonis’ research interests include transitions to modernity and the early modern world; the dynamics of island societies; the Mediterranean and Mediterranean world; fluid identities and cultural interactions; alternative/indigenous modernities; and moral economy.
Antonis is currently revising his doctoral thesis for publication. It is an attempt to understand and classify the insularity of Cyprus by adopting three different vantage points from which he is exploring the Cypriot eighteenth century, and according to which the book is organised: the broader Mediterranean, the imperial Ottoman, and the local.
Building on his doctoral research, Antonis’ research plans revolve around the idea of identifying a typology of Mediterranean insularities. Such a typology aims to examine how islands of different size follow separate economic, productive, social, and political trajectories, develop distinct structures of various forms of power, and occupy different positions in the spatial imagination of either historical actors or modern-day historians. The first step towards this long-term engagement is a new project concerning a comparison of Cyprus and Crete that aims to test, enrich, and further explore Braudel’s idea of ‘miniature continents’.
